Crowne Plaza in Sohar

A glistening new Crowne Plaza hotel was opened in Sohar. It looks quite inviting and Sohar's beaches are relatively attractive, but I wonder if there will be enough tourist traffic through the area, especially with the current downturn, to keep the place open. It really isn't ideally positioned as a base for exploring the interior and if you're just going for the beach, isn't Salalah a better bet? It is a good stop off between Dubai and Muscat for people wanting to get away from either city. But will that keep the place running? If anyone knows what else they're doing to attract people to Sohar, please comment.

I don't think that the Crowne Plaza in Sohar is directed at tourists, it's nowhere near the beach.

It's close to the Sohar Industrial Port area and is meant to be the place to stay in for people coming to Sohar to do business.

It will have fancy restaurants and leisure facilities for expats and locals working in Sohar as there is barely anything else to do in town.

It's opening almost two years behind schedule. And that's with them choosing Galfar to build it thinking that if you go for a top contractor they would be able to deliver on time.

It is good that Sohar now finally has a quality hotel, though it is a business hotel and located far from the sea. The way things are slowing down in Sohar, I doubt any of the other planned hotels are going to be built with the exception of the Radisson, which will be built on the beach and will have a mix of business and resort functions.

With the Cinema opening soon in Sohar and Safeer Mall opening this past week, Sohar is quite a livable town.

Salalah isn't exactly the best place for enjoying the beach...the beaches in and around it are useless during the monsoon months (although everywhere else in the area is breathtaking in that time).

Its better placed for traffic from Buraimi/Al Ain. Two years behind schedule isn’t much in Oman for a hotel – look at the newish hotel on Masirah – its probably been finish (well the buildings finished ) for 2 or 3 years and still isn’t open and the resort in Mirbat was finished and lying abandoned in May 2004 and again still not open -
